In a March 1913 letter to Hovey, President Edmund James indicated that the University would contribute $10,000 to the expedition–roughly $230,000 in today’s money. This monetary contribution did not come without strings attached: among other things, James wanted the University to be given “equal recognition” for the expedition with the other major sponsors, the American Museum of Natural History and the American Geographical Society.
